Teeth Whitening & TOOTH BLEACHING SERVICES
Everybody loves a bright white smile, and there are a variety of whitening products and procedures available to help you improve the look of yours.
Before a whitening treatment, you should have a professional dental cleaning. All debris, surface staining and accumulated tartar should be removed.
How does teeth whitening work?
Teeth whitening is a simple process. Whitening products contain one of two tooth bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces, which makes the color less concentrated and your teeth brighter.
Yellow teeth will probably bleach well, brown teeth may not respond as well and teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all. Whitening will not work on caps, veneers, crowns of fillings.
Bleaching products contain peroxide(s) which actually bleach the tooth enamel and dentine. The two most common ingredients used to whiten teeth are:
1) Carbamide Peroxide comes in concentrations 10% or 16%. (which is the same as 3,3% H2O2 or 5,3% H2O2 - equivalent) is hydrogen peroxide mixed with urea, an ingredient that extends the effectiveness of peroxide over a longer period of time. These formulas are best for patients who prefer to wear their trays long time (for at least 3 hours) or overnight. This type is called „NiteWhite“.
2) Hydrogen Peroxide comes in concentrations 6%. It is highly potent for a short period of time, and best for patients who need minimal wear time. Shade results are optimal within 2 weeks. Wear time is 30 minutes twice daily. This type is called „DayWhite“.
Will whitening hurt?
When the peroxide in the whitener gets through the enamel to the soft layer of dentin and irritates the nerve of your tooth. You may experience some sensitivity in the form of twinges, shooting pains or even a dull ache but this perfectly normal. It is a temporary state. If you have a tendency to sensitive teeth then there is a greater chance of this happening. In case of increased sensitivity reduce usage time and/or frequency until the sensitivity subsides. Any pain or discomfort can be controlled with painkillers.
Do I need „top up“ sessions? (maintain a new white color, refresh the white color) Is teeth whitening permanent or do you have to keep getting it done?
The results are individual and last quite a long time. Teeth whitening is not a permanent solution. Many factors can influence how long the white effect is. Teeth begine to discolour after a period of time. You can use a home based whitening kit, supported by regular visits to your dentist and dental hygienist. You can also prolong the effect of tooth whitening by using toothpaste which includes a whitening element (this is usually a very mild abrasive) and maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing. Visiting your dentist regularly, which is usually around once every six months, can also extend the beneficial effects. I recommend to repeat the home-tray whitening proces. If you notice that you are coming some darker teeth (re-stain), you may do a refresh bleaching for one to three nights every 1-3 months.
Teeth whitening is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, or persons under 18 years of age.
There are two ways to put the shine back in your smile:
1. In-Office Bleaching, Chairside Whitening
It is a procedure when your dentist or dental hygienist whitens your teeth in about one and a half hours. He/she applies at first so called protective barrier to the edge of the gums and then applies whitening gel. The required number of 20 minutes cycles is usually 2 to 3. Gel is blended regularly, to ensure proper function of the active part on enamel.
2. At-Home Bleaching
The dental hygienist makes a custom-fitted tray for you that will fit your teeth precisely. You can get/ receive the teeth bleaching solution from your dentist's office. Some products are used twice a day for 2 weeks, while others are intended for overnight use for 1-2 weeks. No enamel is lost during the proces of bleaching with Hydrogen Peroxide.
